Harrison Country is an Annapolis, Md. based group consisting of vocalists Don and Karen Harrison, daughters Amy Harrison and Jennie Harrison Young, and Lexi White. They are backed by Maryland legend Bryan Ewald (guitars, bass, mandolin, keyboards) and Annapolis area talents Josh Chapman (bass), Brandon Bartlett (drums), Brad Kimes (drums), Larry Byrne (keyboards, bass, sax) and Aidan Ewald (drums).
Climate Change is “Americana” in the broadest sense, a collection of story songs that draws on a host of different American music traditions. Though there are certainly some reflective, emotion-laden songs on the album, most of the tunes are playful excursions across 21st century America. Climate Change is “folk music” in its most fundamental sense. It doesn’t sound like Baez or Peter, Paul and Mary, but it’s part of the same tradition that gave us John Henry and Scarborough Fair.
As Don explains it, “the people who wrote those songs weren’t trying to create ‘folk music.’ They were telling stories about their lives and the world in which they lived, using language that ordinary people could understand, with the instruments and music traditions available to them at the time. We’re doing the same thing – squabbling teenage girls, gluten free linguini, university safe spaces, blind dates, family vacations.”
And Harrison Country has drawn on a host of great American music traditions: Nashville, Chicago, Motown, Laurel Canyon, Memphis, Bourbon St., Big Pink and Broadway. Climate Change is a joyful adventure much like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna get!
